Narita International Airport - Terminal 3

A long standing Pilot favourite, terminal 3 at the Narita International Airport is a showcase of Japanese design and creativity at its best.

At the best of times, airports can be hard to navigate. Designed in anticipation for the now-postponed 2020 Tokyo Olympics, a running-track inspired way-finding system was implemented by Japanese creative lab PARTY, retailer Muji and consultants Nikken.

The aim was to design an economic solution for way-finding. Steering clear of the familiar travelators and digital signage, PARTY opted for a simple yet effective solution; colour coded rubber paths. Sky-blue for departures, earth-red for arrivals with graphics directly applied to walls and paths.

Simple, effective.
